Milan Fashion Week – Burberry Prorsum – F/W 2011

Burberry continued its e-commerce strategy and offered the coats and bags up for sale immediately following the sale. I don’t know about anyone else, but if I’m going to spend upwards of $2,000 I need to try that shit on. But what would I try on here? There was a weird psuedo-Russian vibe going on here. The coats and bags were clearly the focus since that’s what they were trying to sell. All other articles of clothing took a backseat to the accessories and coats. The coats themselves for me fell anywhere between non-offensive to atrocious with a few sweaters thrown in. If you watched the show, some of those models could barely walk in those coats because they seemed so stiff. It looked like they were walking around in starched shells.

What say you?

Cute if not boring.

Ridiculous. But at least editorial-worthy.

The two above actually made me cringe. Cowprint fur collar?? BLURGH

Meh.

Look how it’s bunching up everywhere! Even those ridiculous aviator coats from last fall seemed easier to walk in.

And making it rain on the runway? PUH-leeze – gimmick gimmick gimmick. I’m surprised they weren’t trying to tell those transparent rain covers too. Overall, the drive to sell immediately after runway seems to be the driving force behind the shows for Burberry and while that’s not terrible, I don’t know how effective that is with a collection that is semi-ready to wear.

Wanted to love it, but left with an uneasy feeling in my stomach. Moreso following the love it seems to be getting.

Milan Fashion Week – Jill Sander

Here’s what GQ.com says:

Raf Simons dreams in technicolor. Vivid shades like geranium, lyme grass, and daffodil take their inspiration from the smallest details in nature, and look electric against a blackened Florentine sky. Pleated detailing on the back of a techno trench shows the designer’s skill for precise, razor-sharp tailoring. A series of slim-cut suits in black-on-black wool hit just the right beat amid all the screaming brights. Graphic color-block-printed shirts seem to get their gusto from the hard-edged paintings of Frank Stella, and a black-and-fuchsia striped sweater nods to the punk style of the Mudd Club. Raf’s bold swagger is in full force here, goose bumps included.

You know, I never have a problem with color but I think about what the “man” that would wear these clothes and it doesn’t make sense to me. These are clothes that would look good in an editorial, but not really anywhere else. The colors seem a little too retro for me and all I can picture is how fast they’ll get dirty. Seems the only compliment you can give menswear is about the tailoring – let’s break out of the box here! Something just screams Old Navy basics here…

Burberry Prorsum Resort! Here are the men’s pieces.

Clearly in Burberry world, you still wear trench coats at the resort. I still love it – classic shapes and a color pallet that can’t fail – blacks, blues, and olive greens. I want everything!

Trendspotting: Man Dresses

I’m pretty sure this would never fly in America (unless your Marc Jacobs), and I’m pretty sure H&M tried to push these, but there’s reports of the man-skirt growing in popularity in Japan.

Referred to as “Herbivores” – a term which refers to men who have a stronger focus on their appearance than like manly things like sex and monster trucks – these young men in Japan are popularizing the man-dress. I don’t think this is a recent development, but this is one of those Japan things people like to pick up on.

Dresses for men are nothing new to the fashion world, but street-wise I think it’s still in its infancy. I’m pretty girly, but I don’t think I could hop on board this one. Thoughts? Hot or fug?

And gladiator sandals on men continue to gross me out. I’m on the fence about the blazer + short shorts look.

Trends I Hate – Shirts with Shit on them

I think this is something that started out as douche-bag club wear, and in recent years has someone become acceptable as douche-bag day wear.

Propagated by stores like Express, douche bag clothes are more and more easily accessible. This plague has got to stop! THERE IS A FAMINE OF BEAUTY!

Okay, so I had the hardest time posting these photos because I thought I was posting repeats by accident. Turns out, I just can’t tell any of the looks in this collection apart! This is basically the womenswear collection with pants.
